Junior Police Academy Article 2012

In 2006 the Sandpoint Police Department sponsored its first Citizen Police Academy (CPA). The CPA was developed from the department’s utilization of several community policing programs and concepts. One of the unsung successes of community policing throughout the nation and within Sandpoint has been the CPA. The greatest power of CPA’s is that they bridge the gap between the law enforcement community and the public in such a manner that both are strengthened by the experience. Over 100 citizens have graduated from the program.

In 2009 the department added two students from Sandpoint High School to the list of attendees. Over the coming years it became apparent that a student version of the CPA needed to be developed. In June of 2012 the department launched the Junior Citizens Academy which was dedicated to high school age youth. It was determined from this introductory program that an in school program need to be developed.

In January of 2012 the department in partnership with Sandpoint High School lunched a one credit elective class known as “An Overview of Criminology”. The current class has 30 students which are instructed by departmental officers over a semester which covers 48 different law enforcement units.
